Virginia Beach Historic Preservation Plan

Location

Virginia Beach, VA

Partners

City of Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach Historic Planning Commission

Virginia Department of Historic Resources

Project Goals

In collaboration with the City of Virginia Beach and the VDHR, CPG updated the city’s 30-year-old historic preservation master plan.

CPG collaborated with city staff and the Historic Preservation Commission to develop recommendations for the historic preservation program using guiding principles developed through stakeholder interviews, community engagement, and a city-wide public opinion survey.

Project Design

CPG staff summarized existing preservation challenges and opportunities, as well as risks to historic and cultural resources.

The Virginia Beach Preservation Plan is a graphically dynamic and accessible document that provides comprehensive recommendations for programming, resource stewardship, and risk management for the city’s historic and cultural resources as well as markers for measuring success.

Accomplishments

The document was accessible to all stakeholders and aligned with the Cultural & Historic Districts Design Guidelines CPG previously created.

The document provided a ten-year plan for survey and documentation efforts. The plan also provided examples for engaging the community in preservation and increasing awareness of the city’s historic assets, which was a key goal for the project partners.
