Project Goals
Originally constructed as the Portsmouth YMCA, the building was converted to apartments in the 1990s. and in 2022 underwent a renovation for continued use as apartments.
Project Design
Due to previous renovations, limited historic materials remained at the start of the project, a factor that can present a challenge for this type of project.
CPG provided building treatment recommendations to retain the remaining historic materials while upgrading finishes where necessary for continued use.
Challenges & Accomplishments
The developer hoped to find a way to use the area in the basement that formerly featured a pool; this was a unique space and had to be treated strategically to comply with VDHR standards.
The team proposed the installation of an overbuilt floor within the pool to provide utility for the space and was ultimately successful in meeting both VDHR’s standards for rehabilitation and the developer’s vision – a win-win!
